AI4DIET

Livestock systems are essential to food security, rural economies, and the circular use of biomass. However, their environmental footprint, including greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen pollution, and land use pressure, makes their agroecological transition a priority. Nutrition is a key driver of this transformation, with major influence on environmental, economic, and animal health outcomes. Current feed evaluation systems and rationing tools were mostly designed for conventional systems. They rely on mechanistic models, average feed values, and objectives focused on animal performance and diet cost. These approaches are not suited to agroecological systems, where feed resources are more diverse, local, and variable, and where broader goals such as environmental impact, autonomy, and social acceptability must be addressed. Data are also often heterogeneous, incomplete, or poorly structured. Existing tools do not support multi-criteria decision-making nor adaptation to varied farming contexts.

The AI4Diet project aims to modernize animal feeding strategies using artificial intelligence, in combination with established nutritional models and close stakeholder engagement. It will develop new models and tools to assess feed values and animal requirements, and to design rations that balance nutritional needs with environmental, economic, and societal expectations.
